Today we were at a potluck for square dancers. Usually when we’re square dancing there’s no time for a good chat. So, once in a while we have a potluck and sit down together and just visit with each other. Such a simple thing. So important to our lives.
When we were finished eating, we square danced. Not too surprising, is it? But the square dancing was easy and fun, not a puzzle between ears and body, but just fun. On top of that, the caller taught us the Virginia Reel (and early form of square dancing and precursor to Contra Dancing).
I must have learned the Virginia Reel when I was a kid, because the pleasure was immediate, as was the fun. No wonder people in young America loved it so. As we caught on to the dance, people began to improvise when it was their turn to dance — and so did the caller. What fun we had.
The caller also taught us a simple line dance. You could tell that some of us had been line dancing and some had not, but we all had a good time. This was not the line dancing of the form “don’t screw up or we’ll stomp you” this was just fun.
So, we had a good day. I was exhausted because I’m getting over a cold, but I didn’t have to rest until we got home.
Next weekend we go to the State Square Dance Convention. I hope it’s as much fun as the potluck.
